Who We Are
Our name is Bethel. The name comes from the Bible story in Genesis 28, and means house of God. That’s what we earnestly want to be: a place and a people in whom God will dwell! We pray He will be honored among us.
We believe in and belong to Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. He has redeemed
us from sin, and He governs our lives according to His Word, the
Bible. A hallmark of Christian life is living by the Book,
honoring Him by obeying His Word, the Bible. We hope the following
questions and answers convey what Bethel Church is all
about.
- What does it mean that we are Reformed?
- What are the historic statements of our faith?
- What does it mean to be Presbyterian?
- What does it mean that we are distinctively reformed and actively evangelistic?
- What style of worship is conducted at Bethel Church?
- How does one become a member of Bethel Church?

What does it mean that we are Reformed?
This term points back to our historic heritage in the Protestant Reformation
in the 16th Century, led mostly by the teachings of John Calvin and
Martin Luther. But it means more than that. It also refers to our
beliefs about God, about us, and about our duty to live life (to be
formed and re-formed) for God every day of our lives. Click

Theology".

What are the historic statements of our faith?
Our beliefs are written down in standards or creeds that date back
to the time of the Reformation. We happily subscribe to the Westminster
Confession Of Faith, the Westminster
Larger Catechism and Shorter
Catechism, as well as the documents known as the Three Forms of
Unity :
These creeds all emphasize the Biblical truths of God’s majestic sovereignty and
lordship; that all humans (we too!) are comprehensively sinful in
their hearts and lives; that salvation is only found in Jesus Christ,
who gives us new birth; that Christians are duty bound to follow the
teachings of the Bible, and thus to honor our Lord in the way we live
out our lives Monday through Saturday as well as in church on Sunday.
Our desire is to help each other grow in a truly Reformed worldview,
so that they might be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Rom.
12:2) which will impact every area of life. These confessions are
summarized in the historic creed (written a half century or so after
the last writings of the New Testament) known as the
Apostles Creed .

What does it mean to be Presbyterian?
By the name of our denomination, we describe our representative form
of church government and the structures which hold churches accountable
to each other. Local churches are governed by a Session
of presbyters (elders), elected by the members of the
congregation. Representatives of local churches within a geographical
area compose a presbytery. Representatives of presbyteries
meet annually at General Assembly. Thus, through the combined
efforts and resources of all the churches, we are enabled to advance
God's Kingdom much more effectively.

What does it mean that we are distinctively reformed and actively evangelistic?
At Bethel, our emphasis on understanding a ministry that is called
to be "Distinctively Reformed...Actively Evangelistic" is understood
through learning to "think
Biblically" and to "live
covenantally". Our mission and ministry plan continues to focus
on outreach and evangelism on the one hand, and careful nurture and
training of those the Lord has brought to us on the other. We hope
to grow both numerically and spiritually through distinctively reformed
theology and dynamic evangelism. Our worship and prayer drive all
evangelism, discipleship, and service activities. We intend to expand
our presence and influence in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. All
of this, of course, is in the Lord’s hand. Bethel is, after all, His
church! To Him be all praise!
|
What style of worship is conducted at Bethel Church?
Bethel worships the Lord by placing His Word as the focus of our time
of worship, but surrounds it with singing and music which is a combination
of traditional and contemporary, and everything in between!
|
How does one become a member of Bethel Church?
Twice a year (at least) we offer a series of eight classes to introduce
people to Bethel called Bethel University. We share our vision for
the future, beliefs, our history, and our organization, so people
can make an informed decision about whether they want to join with
us. There is however, no obligation to join if you attend this class,
which is a great way to learn more about Bethel.
